High Schools Notebook: Softball coach Carlyce Cononie gets 500th victory at Sandalwood

Posted: April 8, 2014 - 11:18pm  |  Updated: April 8, 2014 - 11:23pm

Sandalwood’s Carlyce Cononie has so many titles at school that it’s difficult to keep count of everything that she’s accomplished in 30 years there.

Athletic director.

Girls basketball coach.

Volleyball coach.

Softball coach.

So Cononie didn’t make too big of a deal on March 25 when the Saints beat First Coast in softball for the 500th win of her tenure at Sandalwood.

She’s just doing what she loves to do.

“I really didn’t tell too many people,” said Cononie, who is now 502-179 with the Saints. “It’s part of my life. Playing five sports in high school, then playing at Florida, it’s a part of my life. I get to continue doing things [in athletics]. I still get those butterflies.”

Factor in one softball coaching season at Miramar (25-3), 486 career victories in volleyball and 414 in basketball and she could cross the 1,500-victory mark.

All-State honors

Providence’s Grayson Allen, Trinity Christian’s Isaiah Ford and Potter’s House Christian’s Udoka Azubuike were first-team selections on the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches All-State teams.

Allen earned the honor in Class 3A, Ford in 4A and Azubuike on the independent team.

Also making the squads: Providence’s Christian Terrell (second team in 3A), Baker County’s Charles Ruise (second team in 5A), Ribault’s Hari Hall and Fort White’s Melton Sanders (both third team in 4A), and Arlington Country Day’s Brandone Francis (second team) and Potter’s House’s Malik Carter (third team), both on the independent squad.
