Despite making bogeys on three of his first four holes and finishing with a 75 on Friday, Michael Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach remains in contention in the Florida State Amateur.

Smith is alone in fourth place at 2-over-par 144 following his round at the Jupiter Hills Club Hills Course (par-70). Smith shot 69 on Thursday at the par-72 Village Course.

Smith, a Nease graduate, is five shots behind leader Sam Horsfield, a 16-year-old Davenport resident who shot 67 at the Hills to finish at 3-under 139.

Nick Brothers (71) of Crystal River and Alex Gates (72) of Clermont are tied for second at 1-over.

Michael Mattiace of Jacksonville, 15, followed up a first-round 70 with a 78 at the Hills Course to drop into a tie for 11th at 6-over. Taylor Hancock (74) of the University of North Florida is tied for 19th at 8-over.

The tournament moves to the Hills Course for the weekend rounds.

Price has fast start

Kaitlyn Price of Jacksonville Beach, a member of the Central Florida golf team, shot 3-under-par 69 at the Deerwood Country Club on Friday to take a three-shot lead over Mia Zanghetti of Ponte Vedra in the first round of the First Coast Women’s Amateur Championship.

Price is a Providence graduate while Zanghetti (72) is entering her senior year at Bolles this fall.

Susie Fonde, Courtney Cobb and Tama Caldabaugh are tied for third after shooting 75s.

Faye Shepherd leads the Senior Championship division by three shots after a 78.
