Florida, Florida State extend football rivalry

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston gets off a pass against Florida last November.

Not that anyone was worried but the University of Florida and Florida State have extended their football contract though the 2018 season. The current contract would have expired after next season's game.

The Seminoles beat UF 37-7 last season in Gainesville on their way to winning the BCS national championship. The game is played at Florida in odd-numbered years and at Tallahassee in even-numbered years. The two teams also have met twice in bowls, both in the Sugar (1995 and 1997).

Florida holds a 34-22-2 edge in the series. The Seminoles have won three of the last four, and before that, the Gators won six in a row.

Florida also announced it will play host to East Carolina on Sept. 12, 2015.
