It's early, but Gus Bradley delivered what might end up being one of his funniest lines of training camp on Friday.
I asked him about rookie outside linebacker Telvin Smith's quest to gain weight. The fifth-round pick from Florida State is listed at 6-foot-3, 218 pounds. The Jaguars would like to see the speedy Smith get well into the 220s.
After I asked Bradley if Smith had gained weight (Smith told me earlier he had), Bradley fired off this zinger:
"Yeah, he did. I said, 'What are you, 218?' He said 219. I think he's very conscious of it. Leave him alone on that alright. I think he's going to come up with a complex on that."
Smith is trying to earn a spot in the nickel package, allowing the Jaguars to take advantage of his coverage skills. Bradley complimented Smith's reactionary quickness, but said the coaches are working with him on cleaning up his footwork.
When I talked to Smith, he said one challenge during camp will be not losing weight.
"I'm up right now, pushing 220," Smith said. "I'm trying to get into the 220s. I've got to get through camp and hold it on."
