When Gov. Rick Scott appears in Orange Park on Monday to kickoff his re-election campaign, his former sidekick from nearby Fleming Island will be somewhere waiting for an apology she expects will never come.

Former Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll told The Florida Times-Union on Wednesday she felt cheated by Scott and his top staff for abandoning her 13 months ago when she was abruptly asked to resign the state’s second highest office. It was her first interview with the Times-Union since she left office in March 2013.

Carroll, 54, said Scott’s chief of staff Adam Hollingsworth and Scott’s general counsel sought her resignation immediately after Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents questioned her about work her public relations firm did with Allied Veterans of the World. The visits came the same day as police arrested 57 people in a gambling ring tied to Allied and its Internet cafes.

Carroll said Hollingsworth told her that her continued work under Scott would undermine his legislative efforts, without giving her any details or due process. Carroll said recently released documents from the FDLE investigation prove she did nothing criminal and that $24,000 in income she failed to report on financial disclosure forms and her federal taxes was a bookkeeper’s oversight she fixed during the investigation.

The FDLE referred the case to the state ethics commission to review the financial disclosure form issue.

“I felt so betrayed,” Carroll said. “I felt that the loyalty that I gave I didn’t receive in return.”

Carroll, a retired Navy lieutenant commander, said she did nothing wrong but felt obliged to sign the one-sentence resignation letter to honor her chain of command.

“Who wants to work with a senior that doesn’t want you there?” she said.

The Clay County Republican believes she was set up for an unknown reason and regrets leaving the job she held since being elected with Scott in 2010. Carroll said Scott didn’t talk with her about his resignation request and hasn’t reached out to her since. She said she also hasn’t tried to contact him.

Scott did not return a message left through his press office and Hollingsworth didn’t return a call and a text from The Times-Union. Scott’s press secretary, John Tupps, said in an e-mail that Carroll’s public service — she also was elected five times to the House — was appreciated.

“Jennifer Carroll made the right decision for her family by resigning,” Tupps said in the two-sentence e-mail.

During the wide-ranging interview at the Fleming Island Golf Club clubhouse, Carroll said she was excited about her upcoming tell-all biography, to be released Aug. 27 on her birthday, and her new found appreciation for spending time with her husband and three children. She also said she’d like to run for office again, possibly elsewhere, and would be better prepared next time.

“I was a bit naive ... in how treacherous and backstabbing the political game could be,” she said. “I would now have my eyes wide open to know that the jabs may be coming from your own people.”

A good chunk of the hour, however, involved talking about the damage she believes Scott and his top staff caused to her reputation and her ongoing efforts to clear her name.

She said she felt shunned from the beginning of Scott’s first term and believes he used her to get votes from blacks and former supporters of Bill McCollum, whom Carroll backed before Scott defeated him in the 2010 Republican primary.

As for the day of her resignation, Carroll said she was surprised to see Hollingsworth and the general counsel standing outside her door as the FDLE agents walked out. She said she greeted them with no idea what would come next.

“He [Hollingsworth] goes, ‘We had this talk with the governor a couple of days ago and he’s asking for your resignation,’” she said. “I go, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong.’ He goes, ‘It’s just going to distract the governor from his legislative session.’”

Carroll said after signing the previously prepared one-line resignation letter, Hollingsworth told her to cancel her appointments and stay in her office. She said she was told that afternoon Scott was holding a press conference about the matter the next day.

Carroll said she should have been invited to stand with Scott and allowed to bow out gracefully. She said was upset that her resignation was tied to the Allied probe and sensed a coldness because Scott sought her ouster without any concern for her $124,000 annual salary she used to support her family.

“It hit me like a ton of bricks,” she said.

She wept as she talked about the friends and family who offered her prayers. She also said she learned a lesson by being shunned by some people she thought were friends.

Since resigning, Carroll took a job as senior advisor to a business based on West Palm Beach. She said she also spends time with her family and is awaiting final edits on her untitled biography, which will run about 300 pages.

She said writing the book was therapeutic and allowed her to find peace. She said she hopes readers will appreciate her reflections on her life, including her struggles to succeed as a black and a woman, and her efforts to set the record straight over her resignation.

“Hopefully, it will be something that’s inspirational, motivational and uplifting to people to talk about some of my trials and tribulations and overcoming them,” she said.

Carroll hinted at the potential explosiveness of her biography when, with a shy smile, she declined to give her evaluation of Scott’s first-term in office.

“I’ll save that for the book,” she said.

Considering all the

Considering all the unresolved allegations surrounding ms carroll might be the most interesting chapters are yet to come.

My uninformed opinion is of course she was set up. But she wasnt shoved out because of allied or any of her other ethical lapses. Mr scott seems to surround himself with unethical folks so she fit right in there. It was because of the lesbian stuff.

Hopefully she exacts her revenge with campaign killing dirt on the guv. But i doubt he ever let her deep enough into the lair for any real good stuff.she may just be hoping someone will pay her to not write a book.

Whatever the case she's an embarraasment to the officer corp.

Jennifer......you were a

Jennifer......you were a scapegoat....corruption always has to have one. I am sorry that it had to be you. I have never met you nor do I know you but do know Scott is not concerned for the best interest of the people, just as he has NEVER been TRANSPARENT as he promised the people.

The fact that for some strange reason I sensed and took a guess about the circumstances of your sudden resignation just as I was correct about his demand for your resignation. There is much muck for him to slide through for his upcoming election not created by anyone but himself of coarse. This just further supports my feelings that Governor Scott and State Attorney Corey apparently share cheat notes, and most likely practice for those demanding resignations or else....perhaps something would not look proper in your file for future endeavers. I can only guess that indeed most likely you were obviously set up.

How is it Coreys family had knowledge to sell their gambling business before all this went down? FDLE Executive Investigation connections perhaps. I know my murdered child deserves justice she has never received just as I deserve proper closure. I am so sure of it I am willing to give Scott some of those transparency sheets to prove me wrong....

I think Ms. Carroll is naïve

I think Ms. Carroll is naïve enough to think that there is some sort of honor among thieves.

Speaking of loyalty, she didn't show much of that to her staff. She thinks the Governor gave her a raw deal? What does she think some of her staff thought about the shaft she tried to give them?

Her biggest problem, in my opinion, is that she got where she was by walking on the shoulders of those below her and was egotistical enough to think she did it on her own.

If you want to run with the big dogs you can't get caught with your fingers in the cookie jar over some petty thievery worth less than a couple hundred thousand.

She's a prime example of the Peter Principle.

“I was a bit naive ... in how treacherous and backstabbing the political game could be,” she said.

Carroll was far from naive. She knew exactly how the game was played learning it the best while in the military and played it well enough as a pawn for Allied.

Obviously she "forgot" about money she received from Allied and only recently claimed those "gifts" on her returns.

Liar? yes. Naive? never!

Set up what a joke! Scott

Set up what a joke! Scott picked Carroll based on her past dirty deeds. Birds of a feather flock together and Scott and Carroll are true soul mates. As for her ability to pull in black votes that is a big joke. I know plenty of black's from both parties and none of them like Carroll. Ms. Carroll your a crook and a liar and a disgrace to this country and stop using the title Vet. I have met people who severed with Carroll and she was no Mother Teresa. Ms. Carroll you were a back stabber in the Navy and your a liar now. As for Scott he's a criminal and should be in jail. I'm still walking around with my lamp in Tallahacky looking for an honest man. Ms. Carroll "thou doth protest too much me thinks"!
That's all for now kiddies please remember to tune in next week for the new magic word ( hint always tell the truth).

Good Day

Wow, a black female

Wow, a black female Republican feeling betrayed by her party.

I thought everyone knew by now that the only reason the GOP welcomes black females at all is to give the appearance of diversity and absolutely nothing else.

But then again she is a Repub, and we all know their mental deficiencies are absolutely legendary.

And Saltmarsh cracker (ever an apropos name if I ever heard one) evidently has a thing for Repug female criminals (yes "genius", willful failure to report income makes you a "criminal"). Unless of course you believe she "forgot" to report a six-figure income. But then again - we know you Fox News junkies will swallow just about anything poured into your troughs.

I'll bet these same geniuses felt sorry for Sarah Palin - another Repub "intellectual icon". Such a pathetic bunch....

During this hour-long

During this hour-long interview, Ms. Carroll, a northeast Florida resident, neglected to provide the name of the Palm Beach company for which she is currently senior advisor and for which, it has been announced, she will soon be President and CEO.

According to the Palm Beach Post newspaper, the penny-stock company is Global Digital Solutions, which provides "knowledge-based and culturally attuned social consulting and security-related solutions in unsettled areas” and which has announced plans to merge with Airtronic USA, Inc., a small-arms manufacturing company which identifies itself as the nation's"largest woman-owned small arms manufacturer." Airtronic produces grenade launchers, a rifle, a machine gun, and a 30-round magazine. It declared bankruptcy last summer but Global's press releases identify that as a planned part of the merger process.

It's hard to feel sorry for

It's hard to feel sorry for this woman. She profited personally from the criminal gambling empire built by local lawyers and police officials. She willingly became the #2 for a man very nearly charged and convicted for stealing millions of dollars for himself from a hospital chain. She failed to report some of her income until investigators found the omission. She completely escaped prosecution for her role in fostering a criminal enterprise that milked hundreds of millions of dollars from the poorest citizens of the state who deluded themselves into believing that they might actually win a windfall in the rigged and illegal gambling casinos that they patronized.

Mr Nice Guy…I don't think

Mr Nice Guy…I don't think Karen Bowling's a criminal…I do think she is very adaptable and a team player. I do not know if she benefited from the sale of Solantic. As for Governor Scott, he rewarded her loyalty by putting her on the FSCJ board and helped her land a job with Alvin Brown.
I suspect Jennifer Scott's lesbian comments were "off the cuff" intended to make her look appealing and not to denounce lesbians. I believe her political days are over.

I'm amazed at the fact that

I'm amazed at the fact that she felt used by the Governor's election team because she was an African American female. Did she really think the good ole boys wanted to play with her? Yes you were a pawn in a game. Now you see how it feels for other African Americans who you have tooted your noise at.....

He needed her for the black

He needed her for the black vote, such as it was. Now her (after a year) replacement is on the ticket for the Hispanic vote. Here's a bright idea: Give the LG something to DO.

ek III - The things he did

ek III - The things he did give her to do she hosed up because they expected her to actually know how to do something. She should have stayed in the job she gave up. Hide in the weeds, don't make too much noise and you can survive for a long time. Be the Lt Governor and the lights get too bright.

Ms. Carroll let her ambition

Ms. Carroll let her ambition overwhelm her good sense and figuratively climbed into bed with scumbags. Many might say she probably got what she deserved. She should have known better.

So she feels betrayed? Maybe

So she feels betrayed? Maybe she needs to do some introspection first. Maybe look at her own actions over the course of her military, private, and political career. Maybe she "betrayed" a few people along the way because it was the pragmatic thing to do to get to the next level; you know, one has to do what one has to do.

That little thing called "Karma" can be real nasty at times.
