Officials with Duval County Public Schools are aware of a Facebook post directed at Superintendent Nikolai Vitti that could be interpreted as a threat against his life, said spokeswoman Marsha Oliver.

She said the post was brought to the school system’s attention Thursday afternoon and then relayed to the Duval Schools Police Department.

The police are investigating the post and will determine if it is serious and what needs to be done with the situation, Oliver said.

“I can confirm for you that information has been shared with our school police department,” Oliver said in an email. “We are confident that they will conduct a thorough review to determine credibility and resolution. In the meantime, we are continuing our work in serving the educational needs of Duval County students.”

It is unclear if the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will be needed in the investigation, Oliver said.

Especially on Independence

Especially on Independence Day, "Othello" is entitled to his well-known dislike of police officers, fire fighters, teachers, and unions. However, that dislike and obvious bias against those groups should put his opinions into proper perspective.

Employers have had little difficulty in identifying employees on Facebook, with whose postings they take issue. Recent court decisions make it even more clear that users should have little expectation of privacy in such postings. The courts have also upheld terminations and other discipline for certain postings.

It should not take law enforcement long to identify the person making the post, if they have not already done so.

Lilrio: Maybe it wasn't a

Lilrio: Maybe it wasn't a threat at all.

FTA: "...could be interpreted..."

Given how police are prone to overreact, I predict that an arrest, accompanied with the proper beatdown, will be imminent.

I love it when people who use

I love it when people who use the term "union thugs" that have no problem with business groups such as the Chamber of Commerce. The two groups are one in the same, groups of individuals that come together in a shared interest. They both like big government and using government to gain an advantage over others.

My concern is not that groups of people organize, it is when those groups, whether the Chamber or the AFL-CIO use government to force people to accept their beliefs.

BTW crazy Tea Partiers like Othello are just as angry as "lazy" teachers since Vitti is such a big Common Core supporter....maybe he's trying to deflect attention?????

What does the DTU have with

What does the DTU have with this story? Why would anyone believe 8000 teachers hate him? Are these comments examples of the term, troll, I have heard tell about?

I don't know about wanting

I don't know about wanting "big" government, but I want enough government. A recent broadcast news story related how identity theft is increasing, due to theft of mail from certain mailboxes. I want postal workers hired to the high standards of the 1960's, and my mail delivered right to my home or office, not some "community" mailbox.

Another article reported the death of a veteran in Albuquerque, across the street from a VA hospital, and mentioned a 15-20 minute wait for an ambulance. I want enough government to provide adequate and effective emergency responses.

I want enough aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines, along with enough covert operations, such as England and Israel are noted for, so that our enemies are not quite so tempted to threaten us so often.

I want enough bridge inspectors, building inspectors, and others who keep things from falling on me, or out from under me. And, I want enough teachers, so that a generation of young people will understand and at least consider these needs as well as those of others.

I would only describe less

I would only describe less than 10% of teachers as lazy and thats because administrators turn a blind eye as long as they kiss butt. the teachers i know work 24/7. Vitti is hated because he insults teachers and promotes bullies.

Mad... I happen to move here

Mad... I happen to move here about a year ago because I was fed up with the crap in Miami. It appears to be no different here. I was hoping it would.

And as a teacher, taxpayer, and a parent I am tired of teachers like you who complain about everything from having to work like everyone else for a paycheck but use the union for pay increase every year, a golden pension, and benefits. Stop blaming everyone but something and teach.

If they're making such a big

If they're making such a big deal about a "threat" that was posted on facebook why not tell us what the threat was? Could be it was nothing but they want to threaten people who speak their mind. Could be the opening act before vitti and his charter school supporters announce something the public really wont like.

You anti union people are so thoroughly brainwashed its pathetic. Its one thing to have a specific, defined issue with a union. But to use any story about education, health care or government as an opprtunity to express the ignorant stereotypes the corporartions have tricked you in to having is like some predictable science experiment. You fools do realize the multinational corporations want to make money off those services. They want to provide much lower quality service and pocket the difference when they hire untraoned poverty scale workers. There is A LOT of money to be made there. That is why they are attacking their competition (unions)and brainwashing the useful idiots with fox, rush, hannity, et al.

I'm glad the Supreme Court

I'm glad the Supreme Court stated that the taxpayers have the right to get rid of public unions and their luxury taxpayer funded pensions.

What a person states on a Facebook page and what they do are usually two different things.

That isn't close to what the

That isn't close to what the Supreme Court ruled.

I continue to ask, if the fault with Duval County schools, or more correctly perhaps, educational outcomes, is the teachers' union, then what are the excuses from the several southern states which do not allow public employee collective bargaining, and teachers' unions are non-existent, or have little power or influence, and whose outcomes are worse? What is the explanation then for the several Florida counties whose educational outcomes are often touted as being so good, and whose teachers are also represented by the union, and often better compensated?

It is an over-simplification to blame educational outcomes solely on teachers and their unions, but one which administrators and others often embrace. It is a troubling, maybe even dangerous over-simplification too, as one might suspect a connection between parental attitudes toward education, educational outcomes, and local problems with crime.

Too few comment on the role of parents for some responsibility and duty regarding their children's education, and that of older students to realize the lifelong importance of education. I was educated in Duval County junior and senior high schools. Our children were as well, subsequently doing fine in college and post-graduate work. In all of that, I never experienced a "lazy" teacher, or one who was sub-standard, though many were indeed better than others.

At no time though, would my mother accept the explanation for any undesirable outcomes in my own education as having been the teacher's fault.

asmith32 you are complaining

asmith32 you are complaining about dade and duval. Your just not happy anywhere. If your not gonna be honest then just stop posting. In this article you commented that you taught at NW for 10 years. Today you say you moved here a year ago.

http://members.jacksonville.com/news/metro/2012-08-25/story/duval-superi...

My guess is your not a teacher at all. You seem to despize teachers just like Vitti. Why would you complain about a pension. BTW, everyone benefits from contracts negotiated by the union, not just members.

I wonder, exactly what police

I wonder, exactly what police powers does the DCS police force hold when off school property? Should I be in fear of being arrested by them for my illegal activities?

It appears Superintendent

It appears Superintendent Vitti has burned a lot of bridges.

We know what he thinks about people being referred to as "rednecks".
We know that when he pushed the Forrest renaming process, that there was nothing that could be said or done to save the name of Forrest. Superintendent Vitti was judge and jury, and had his own agenda.
We know that where the funding is coming from to change Forrest, is suspicious.
We know that Forrest was swept under the rug as fast as possible.

It is interesting some of the comments that have been made here. It makes me think of the word "vetted". Was Vitti told he really didn't have to have any accountability? It sure appears to be the case.

It appears a lot of the changes Superintendent Vitti is behind is finally catching up with him. I am not sure if there were "Assistant Superintendents" before the reign of Vitti? If not what is the cost of bringing Vitti on board?

I look forward to reading more comments.
